Job SummaryPOSITION DESCRIPTION: The Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) announces a tenure-track faculty position in the area of hydrological sciences. As hydrologic and water resources problems are becoming increasingly important in the desert southwest, the successful candidate will be able to leverage UTEP’s regional location in the southwest to perform cutting-edge water-related research. We are particularly interested in candidates who use isotopic tools to investigate water-related problems. We expect to hire at the assistant professor level, however, candidates with exceptional qualifications including industry experience may be considered for a higher rank.
Required QualificationsREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in the geosciences or closely related discipline is required. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a funded research program, to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research, and to teach introductory earth science as well as higher-level courses in the candidate’s specialty
Additional InformationABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES: The Department of Geological Sciences at UTEP has a faculty of 14 and enrollment of more than 100 graduate and undergraduate students. The department is housed in an attractive, 90,000 sq. ft. building that contains faculty and student offices, laboratory and classroom space with research infrastructure that includes wet chemical laboratories, a clean room, and a variety of analytical facilities, including a multi-collector (MC)-ICP-MS for measuring isotopic ratios. Other research centers at UTEP that focus on water research include the Center for Inland Desalination Systems (CIDS) and the Center for Environmental Resource Management (CERM). Job SummaryThe Repository Performance Department (06712), part of Sandia's Carlsbad Programs Group (CPG), maintains experimental, modeling, and hydrologic monitoring capabilities to support the DOE in assuring uninterrupted compliance of the WIPP with a variety of federal and state regulations. The selected individual will conduct field investigations (geophysical and hydrogeological) of the presence and extent of shallow groundwater near the WIPP surface facilities and of recharge and cross-formation leakage in karstic terrain west of the WIPP site, and may also participate in hydraulic well testing and well-test analysis. Tasks will also include development and implementation of appropriate conceptual models, selection and modification of appropriate numerical simulation codes, conducting simulations, and presentation of results to internal and external customers. Occasional travel to Albuquerque is expected. The selected individual may also participate in other DOE projects and water-related projects for other clients.
Required QualificationsA PhD or equivalent degree in hydrogeology, (hydro)geophysics, applied mathematics, or engineering with experience in mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of geophysical and/or hydrogeological processes. Experience must include development of conceptual and numerical models, model calibration, pre- and post-processing of data, data analysis, interpretation, and reporting. Demonstrated excellence in the technical field as well as superior oral and written communication skills are mandatory, as is the ability to function effectively within a diverse team. Residence in Carlsbad, NM is mandatory.
Preferred QualificationsProficiency using Linux, VMS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems; programming in Fortran and C++; expertise with (hydro)geophysical and vadose zone modeling; field experience with hydrogeophysical techniques and with aquifer testing; experience in coupling between hydrological, geophysical, and geomechanical processes; expertise in parameter estimation, geostatistics and uncertainty analysis; experience in conducting technical programs within a regulatory environment; site characterization and/or laboratory experimentation for derivation of model parameters. Experience with stringent QA/QC requirements, such as those associated with the WIPP or Yucca Mountain projects, is highly desirable. Familiarity with modern methods of well-test analysis (e.g., pressure derivatives) is also desirable.

Job SummaryA Water Supply Maintenance Superintendent is responsible for management and direction of the City's water supply system including facilities such as wells, well treatment facilities, reservoirs, pump stations, pressure reducing stations, and related facilities and equipment such as chlorination equipment. The incumbent performs a variety of engineering related and administrative tasks and is responsible for supervising, planning and coordinating the activities of maintenance staff involved in the maintenance, and repair of the City's water supply system. The incumbent in this class functions as the manager for the activities and performance metrics related to the water supply section; is responsible for developing and administering the section operating budget including any professional services and purchasing contracts; and works with engineering staff to project short and long term capital replacement needs. This position reviews engineering plans and specifications related to new or refurbishment projects for all water supply assets; initiates changes to installation and standard details; maintains lists of acceptable manufacturers, products, and materials of construction based on field performance; and oversees construction of facilities from the utility operations and maintenance perspective. An employee in this class participates in the Water Supply Section's long-range and strategic planning; prepares requests for estimates, requests for bids, and documentation for maintenance projects; oversees the development, data entry into, and reports generated from maintenance management software; schedules regular preventative maintenance through a work order system; and provides regular management level performance reports on scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities. The Water Supply Maintenance Superintendent works under the direction of the Assistant Director - Water who reviews results achieved through conferences, reports, and inspections. This class is distinguished from other supervisory classes by responsibility for budget preparation, CIP replacement program preparation, and accountability for performance metrics. The incumbent is responsible for providing City media representatives with all pertinent information related to emergency water problems, issues, and outages associated with water supply equipment and facilities. The employee in this class must be available on a 24-hour basis to cover emergency situations.
Required QualificationsAny combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Business Management, Organizational Management, or closely related field. Considerable (3 - 5 years) experience in the administration, planning, operation, and maintenance of water supply facilities and/or systems. Three years of supervisory or management experience. Proficiency in Windows-based software, including Word, Access, and Excel.

Must possess a Grade 3 certification in Water Distribution and Grade 3 certification in Water Treatment from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) by hire date. This class is responsible for acquiring a minimum of 30 professional development hours (PDHs) every three (3) years to maintain their ADEQ Certification. Must possess a valid Arizona Driver's License by hire date.
