Can We Have It All?

Harvesting Rainwater for Sustainable Living

Stormwater has long been considered a waste product to harness and get out of town as quickly as possible. In the arid West, the scarcity of water combined with the greater focus on stormwater quality issues has caused a resurgence of interest in water harvesting. This field trip will take you to innovative water harvesting sites in the Tucson area to see micro basin landscaping, swales and terraces, French drains, porous pavement, and cisterns. These features have been incorporated into urban right-of-ways, public facilities, as well as in co-housing communities. The trip will also feature informative presentations by site designers and experts in the water harvesting field.

Field trip leaders:

  • Frank Sousa, Lead Hydrologist, City of Tucson Office of Conservation and Sustainable Development
  • Grant McCormick, Facilities Management, University of Arizona
  • Additional trip leaders TBA
