Can We Have It All?

Rainwater Harvesting Workshop

THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL. Enrolled participants can find information on schedule, location, parking, transportation, etc., here.

Rainwater should be added to the list of water resources used by community managers, planners and utilities. In urban Tucson, if all the precipitation in an average year were captured, potable water deliveries could be reduced by 74%! Participants at this workshop will gain hands-on experience of water harvesting techniques employed at the Tucson Campus of The Nature Conservancy, a demonstration site for water harvesting tours and classes. The workshop will also offer a panel discussion on the following topics:

  • how to establish relationships with home improvement retailers in the hope of getting them involved in educating the public on the importance of water harvesting and increasing water harvesting supplies for homeowners;
  • how to interest developers and governmental organizations in community-wide efforts to harvest rainwater;
  • information and case studies from Consortium for Action Throughout the Community to Harvest Water (CATCH Water), an organization that focuses on educational and demonstration programs on water harvesting in the Tucson area;
  • water harvesting courses at the college level.

Workshop Leader: James J. Riley, Dept. of Soil, Water and Environmental Science and Environmental Research Laboratory, University of Arizona.

Dr. Riley has degrees in mathematics, meteorology, and hydrology from the University of Arizona. His career in international agriculture has included extended periods at the Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center in Taiwan, the Western Sudan Agricultural Research Project in Sudan, the Arid Lands Research Center in Abu Dhabi, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as a halophyte consultant.
